Family Dentists and Kids Dental Care

General family dentists care for your entire family from children to the elderly. The focus on the prevention and treatment of oral health issues that affect the teeth, gums, and mouth. By bringing children in to see a dentist at an early age your family dentist can monitor the development of the mouth as a child grows older. This allows the dentist to take notice of any potential malocclusions or issues and resolve them before they develop into anything more serious.

Your family dentist can also help teach your kid how to keep their teeth clean. With all the sugary treats, sticky sodas, and hard candies that kids tend to consume, keeping a child’s smile healthy seems tricky. Regular cleanings, along with education on properly caring for their teeth, go a long way in helping prevent major oral health problems later on in life.

What Happens During Your Child’s Dental Appointment?

Dental appointments for children are generally similar to adult dental appointments. However, children tend to be difficult to handle in the best of medical situations. Children with tooth pain or discomfort are far less likely to sit still and be calm. So, family dentists have to be more patient, more communicative and have to demonstrate effective behavior management techniques when working with kids. This includes meeting with the parents to discuss their child’s dental health, what’s involved with dental procedures, talking about any fears or concerns the child may have.

After the discussion with parents, and ensuring the child’s comfort, an exam is the first step in pediatric dental care. During the exam, the dentist will use a small mirror to examine a child’s teeth, jaw, and gums for any signs of decay, periodontal disease, or damage. This may include X-rays to observe the jawbone for irregularities.

Following the exam, the dentist will then perform a tooth cleaning. This usually involves using a gentle brush and floss or a water pick, as well as a fluoride rinse. Any problem areas may require the use of tools for removing built-up plaque. Once the cleaning is finished, the dentist will advise parents and children on keeping the teeth healthy, as well as give nutrition and diet recommendations. If any oral health issues arise that cannot be resolved during that appointment, the pediatric dentist will communicate the next steps with both patients and their parents.

When Do Children Need To See A Dentist?

It’s recommended that you bring your child to a dental clinic when they’re as young as 6 months old, or when their first tooth comes in. One of the most commonly overlooked aspects of infant care is oral health, which is why it’s important to bring your young children to a dentist. They can not only ensure that your child’s first teeth come in healthy, but can also give information about the development of your child’s mouth.
