Veneers in Southington, CT
A beautiful smile can transform your face. If your smile isn’t as beautiful as you would like it to be, there are cosmetic dental options for changing that. One of these options is dental veneers. Read on to learn more about this procedure and the results it can provide.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are bonded to teeth to improve their appearance. They cover the front of your teeth, changing their size, shape, and color. Veneers can be made from porcelain, or they can be made from resin composite materials.
At Constant Dental Care, we use porcelain veneers. They’re stain resistant, last longer, and mimic the appearance of natural teeth. To attach porcelain veneers, your dentist will need to reshape your tooth by removing some of the enamel. Porcelain veneers have the same color as natural teeth, but your dentist can whiten them for a brighter smile.
Dental veneers help to fix several different cosmetic issues, including:
- Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
- Tooth discoloration that can’t be fixed with a professional cleaning or whitening procedure
- Gaps in teeth
- Pointed or misshapen teeth
- Misaligned teeth
Porcelain Veneer Procedure
The procedure for having porcelain veneers attached can be completed in two or three visits. The process can be done to one tooth or several at once. These visits include an initial examination where your dentist may take X-rays and make impressions of your teeth and mouth. You will also work with your dentist to determine the desired appearance of your veneer teeth. Following the examination, there will be a consultation where your dentist will discuss the procedure and some of its limits with you.
During the procedure, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable during the process. Your natural teeth are then cleaned, polished, and reshaped to fit the veneer. The reshaping is done using a small handheld rotational cutting device known as a bur. Burs come in several different sizes and shapes to allow for precise reshaping to properly fit your porcelain veneers.
A special dental cement is then applied to the veneer to allow it to bond to your natural teeth once they’ve been reshaped. After the veneer is placed onto your teeth, your dentist will use a special light to cure the cement, causing it to harden instantly. The final steps involved checking your bite, removing any excess cement, and making any necessary adjustments. Afterward, you may have to return for a follow-up visit in a couple of weeks to check your gums and the placement of the veneers.
Caring For Your Veneers
A person with new dental veneers does not need to avoid any particular food or beverage. However, while porcelain veneers are resistant to stains, they are still prone to some discoloration over time. It is recommended to limit coffee, tea, and red wine to help the veneers last longer. You may also be advised against biting particularly hard objects or engaging in contact sports without a sturdy mouthguard.
Though veneers cover your natural teeth, you can still experience oral health problems such as cavities and decay. So, it’s important to continue practicing good oral hygiene, such as brushing twice per day and regularly flossing. With the proper care, you can expect porcelain veneers to last for at least ten years.
The Cost Of Veneers
Dental veneers range in price depending on the materials used to fabricate them, the amount of preparation required beforehand, and the number of teeth that need to be covered. Also, because getting veneers is considered an elective procedure, most insurance companies won’t cover the cost of the procedure. Don’t worry, because our flexible payment options mean you won’t have to worry about breaking the bank to achieve the healthy smile you’ve always wanted.
